Abstract

The main altarpiece of the Hermitage of Our Lady of Sopetrán in Jarandilla de la Vera is one of the most significant works of the late Baroque and early Rococo in the Diocese of Plasencia. Built between 1747 and 1751 by the brothers José Manuel and Francisco Ventura de la Inzera Velasco, architects and carvers, it was conceived as a unified design including both the altarpiece and the reliquary chapel. Its structure—comprising a predella, a single body and a shell-shaped attic—introduces rocaille and ornamental features that anticipate the Rococo aesthetic. Sculptors such as Antonio González Baragaña, who carved Saints Justus and Pastor as well as the angelic figures, and gilders including Alonso Recuero, Manuel Urbán, Manuel García Robleda and José Rayo, who carried out the gilding and polychromy between 1758 and 1763, all contributed to the ensemble. Richly adorned with vegetal motifs, masks, hunting scenes, celestial symbols and biblical inscriptions, the altarpiece houses the image of the Virgin of Sopetrán within a reliquary chamber that underscores its devotional and processional function. This work stands as a key example for understanding the stylistic transition and the dynamics of patronage, financing and artistic professionalism in 18th-century Extremadura.
