Désarroi du sujet, vacillement du monde

Disarray of the Subject, Wavering of the World

Désarroi du sujet, vacillement du monde

Abstract

This chapter, drawing on an episode from Patrick Schmoll's novel Là-bas sont les dragons (There Be Dragons), which evokes the biblical story of Jacob's crossing of the River Yabbok, deals with the real and psychological conflicts that arise when crossing waters. Rivers and streams often serve as borders. When the psyche is involved in crossing them (‘psyche is extended’, said Freud), the effects are inevitable. A change of position through the revelation of the irreversibility of his commitment for Caesar crossing the Rubicon, a decisive encounter with the other world for Jacob, crossing the Yabbok at night before wrestling at length with the Other. Real battles and psychological battles, tactical battles and sacred battles continue throughout history to intertwine and separate, sometimes at the cost of a diffuse discontent in culture. A transitional space between worlds, battle renames the subject after immersing it in a matrix of identity.
