This article provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of traditional cable (copper) and modern optical (fiber-optic) solutions used to build feeder lines and highways in various telecommunications and energy networks. The study covers the key technical, economic and operational aspects that determine the choice of a particular technology for specific application scenarios. Special attention is paid to such parameters as bandwidth, signal transmission range without retransmission, resistance to interference (electromagnetic and radio frequency), data transmission security, as well as the cost of infrastructure deployment and maintenance. The advantages and disadvantages of each solution are analyzed in the context of modern requirements for high-speed data transmission, reliability and scalability of networks.
