Observational and Synthetic Flight Track Data for UTLS Evaluation in ICON

Abstract

obs.zip - Contains observational data used throughout a UTLS evaluation in the ICON version 2.6.4 model, including vertical wind data from ATTREX; ERA5 vertical profiles of specific humidity and temperature; MLS swatchs of temperature and specific humidity; vertical wind data from POSIDON; sonde profiles of temperature and humidity from 5 stations in India; superpressure balloon data on wind speed and temperature from the first campaign of Strateole-2; and in-situ aircraft data of the StratoClim field campaign.output.zip - Contains the synthetic flight tracks extracted from ICON version 2.6.4 simulations with six sets of ice microphysics and optics (ICON_synthetic_trajs_*M*O_E.nc), as well as statistics of those synthetic flight trakcs (ICON_synthetic_trajs_stats_*M*O_E.nc). Sets 'E' versus 'E2' indicate two random samplings to establish robustness of results. mean-T-qv-qi-profiles.nc and mean-T-qv-profiles.nc - averaged temperature, specific humidity, and ice mass mixing ratio profiles for a small domain around StratoClim Flight 7 trackhup_by_sim.pkl and hdown_by_sim.pkl - histograms of updrafts and downdrafts for ICON simulations with six sets of ice microphysics and opticstraj_tst00000450_p011.zip - example trajectories within the ICON model version 2.3.0 initiated on 6 August 2017 at 09:00 UTC between 8 and 22 km and at every grid cell between 30-32N, 108.5E-110.5E
