ECMWF daily maximum air temperature exceedance of 27°C - Kent (UK), 2022

Abstract

Science Case Name Multi-hazards in the Southeast UK region Dataset Title ECMWF daily maximum air temperature exceedance of 27°C - Kent (UK), 2022 Dataset Description This dataset consists of a multi-layer image, where each layer represents the individual date within 2022 and pixel values for each date representing where the ECMWF daily maximum air temperature at 2m has exceeded the temperature threshold of 27°C, the threshold indicated by the UK Met Office to signify a heatwave in Kent. Data was generated using code developed within the Goolge Earth Engine online platform and output in GeoTIFF and ENVI formats for interoperabilty and comparative analysis within GIS. Key Methodologies Calculation of pixel threshold exceedance of 27°C for each day on the 2022 daily air temperature variable multi-date image stack, coded in Google Earth Engine online platform. Output in raster format. Temporal Domain Daily: 1st January 2022 to 31st December 2022. Spatial Domain Geographic extent covering the region of Kent, Southeast UK. Bounding Box Dimensions: Upper Left (51.49°N latitude, 0.035°E longitude) and Lower Right (50.91°N latitude, 1.45°E longitude) Dataset in WGS84 decimal degree geographic coordinate system. Approx. 0.01° x 0.01° spatial resolution. Key Indicators Daily binary image stack indicating where pixels exceed the temperature threshold of 27°C, temperature threshold indicated by the UK Met Office to signify a heatwave in Kent. Data Format GeoTIFF (*.tif) and ENVI (*.img + *.hdr) Source Data Primary source: ECMWF Climate Reanalysis ERA5-Land Daily Aggregated dataset (variable: ‘air_temperature_2m_max’), accessed through the Google Earth Engine online platform (GEE) made available to by the Copernicus Climate Data Store (https://cds.climate.copernicus.eu/) under CC-BY-4.0 licence (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/). Coordinate system: WGS84 decimal degree Accessibility 10.5281/zenodo.17107043 Stakeholder Relevance Urban planning departmentsEmergency response organizationsInfrastructure development teamsDisaster risk assessment analysts Limitations/Assumptions Spatial resolution at 0.01° x 0.01° Additional Information Technical specifications: GeoTIFF and/or ENVI formats require use of a multi-band image visualisation package Binary pixel values: 0 representing no threshold exceedance, 1 representing threshold exceedance Contact Information kmcm@bgs.ac.uk
