
In 1921–1939, the most affluent part of the West Belarusian peasantry tried to adaptto capitalist conditions, using hired labour and various kinds of agricultural machinery. At the sametime, preferential bank loans were necessary for such a radical reorganization of the economy, butthe Polish government provided such assistance selectively and insufficiently, so few peasants ofWestern Belarus were able to become real rural entrepreneurs.
