
The article reveals the role of certain Belarusian provinces in the export trade of linengoods in the 1810s – 1850s. A number of counties of Vitebsk and Vilna provinces adjacent to theWestern Dvina water basin were engaged in flax cultivation and its export to the port of Riga. Thesale of flax and flaxseed in Vitebsk province was of particular importance for landowners andpeasants. The foreign trade in flax and seed served these estates as an essential means of supportingtheir material condition and obtaining money to pay state taxes.
