Scorpions are fantastic venomous animals widely distributed across continents. They are considered living fossils due to their presence on Earth, from the Silurian to the present day, demonstrating minimal bodily changes. Scorpion venom is an efficient evolutionary strategy of capture and defense, but it can cause problems when injected into humans, resulting in envenomation that can result in death. Currently, the number of cases of scorpionism reported in Brazil is increasing. However, several social and economic factors modify the natural environments of these animals, which may be contributing to their great dispersion and adaptation to human environments. This review sought to compile the most up-to-date information involving the biological, toxicological and epidemiological aspects of scorpionism.
