Abstract

Reading is a fundamental element for connecting with a vast amount of knowledge from the world that surrounds us, thereby facilitating our understanding of it. This research aims to understand the reading habits of undergraduate students from the National Institute of Higher Education Dr. Raúl Pena (INAES, for its acronym in Spanish), in Asuncion during the year 2020. The study approach is quantitative, non-experimental, and employs a descriptive exploratory cross-sectional design. The sample consists of third-year students from the morning shift of undergraduate programs at INAES, including the bachelor’s degree programs in English Language Education, Korean Language Education, Art Education, Early Childhood Education, and Elementary Education. Research findings indicate that most of the student population reads occasionally and feels that they do not read enough. They demonstrate a preference for narrative texts, primarily in the mystery genre. The students' motivation for reading is learning and entertainment. They dedicate one hour to academic reading and less time to recreational reading.
