Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental disorder with an anxiety base that affects between a few and a dozen percent of people in society who have directly encountered various traumatic events in their lives. PTSD has been known since ancient times, but the first official diagnosis was introduced only in the late 20th century, in 1980, by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Symptoms can appear immediately after the event, weeks, months, or even years later. This disorder is characterized by persistent re-experiencing of the traumatic event, persistent avoidance of stimuli related to the trauma, emotional numbing, a sense of alienation, and increased arousal. Symptoms cannot precede the traumatic event. Among those affected by PTSD, various somatic disorders and substance abuse are significantly more common.
