Otizm Spektrum Bozukluğuna sahip bireylere yönelik Damgalama Ölçeği

Abstract

Stigmatization toward individuals with autism negatively affects both the individuals themselves and their families. Although there are studies on stigma in the field, there is no measurement tool that directly assesses this phenomenon. The aim of this study is to measure the stigma directed toward individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and to develop a stigma scale for individuals with ASD. The validity and reliability study of the scale was conducted with 346 participants over the age of 18. Participants were administered the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Stigma Scale, which consists of 26 items, and the Stigma Scale for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder, which originally consisted of 38 items. In order to enhance item clarity and better assess the level of stigmatization based on individuals' daily routines, a short vignette describing a person with ASD was presented at the beginning of the ASD Stigma Scale. Participants completed these scales face-to-face in approximately 20 minutes.During the scale development process, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was used. Based on the data collected and the analyses conducted, the scale, initially comprising 38 items, was finalized with 30 items. The EFA revealed that the scale consists of seven dimensions, which were labeled as avoidance, prejudice, fear, pity, anger-pressure, discrimination, and responsibility. To test the reliability of the scale, a correlation analysis was performed using the ADHD Stigma Scale, and the item correlations were found to range between .034 and .524. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the scale was calculated as .84. These findings indicate that the scale can be reliably used in future studies on Autism Spectrum Disorder. Keywords: Neurodevelopmental Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Scale Development, Stigma, Labeling
