Daily Modal Split in the city of Cologne 2023 / 2024 (MoCKiii project)

Abstract

This dataset contains the results of computing the daily modal split in the city of Cologne. It is one of the results of the project “MoCKiii” (Mobilitäts-Cockpit Köln - innovativ - integrativ - intelligent) performed by the city of Cologne and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The project was funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport between 2021 and 2024. The developed system for computing the daily modal split shall reveal the development of the modal shares of walking, cycling, public transport, and motorised individual transport. The computation uses daily counts from traffic detectors which are put against the base numbers from the year 2022 for extrapolating the results of the city’s SUMP 2022 survey. The counts stem mainly from the city’s traffic light detectors and permanent traffic counts, including MIT and bicycle counters. Besides predicting the modal split, the system uses mobile phone data from T-Systems to compute the number of the trips performed within the city. The dataset includes the modal shares of the four modes as well as the absolute number of respectively performed trips in Mio. ways per mode. Besides the considered time span the dataset differs from the SUMP survey by regarding the overall traffic in the city of Cologne instead of focussing on the mobility behaviour of the inhabitants. The dataset includes data computed for the time between the 1st of January 2023 until the 31st of December 2024.
