TABLE 1. An annotated catalogue of all the names and combinations published and designations proposed in Kalanchoe between 1801 and 1908 that could be traced in hardcopy and online sources. Some monikers of dubious origin sometimes encountered in the nomenclature and taxonomy of Kalanchoe are also included. Given the length of the Table and for ease of reference, author attributions are given throughout for all the names. In general and unless otherwise stated, the taxonomy of the Kalanchoe names included in the Table deliberately follows Descoings (2003: 143–181), the most recent global synopsis of the genus. In the third column the author attributions, in the widely used standardised format (Brummitt & Powell 1992), given in square brackets at the end of some entries are those most often encountered in the literature and in databases. However, as far as could be determined these square-bracketed author attributions are not correct. “ K.” = “ Kalanchoe ”. #Year publishedSpecies names, including widely used or cited designations not validly published [author attribution often given in online databases, if different]Current taxonomic statusGeographical origin and / or distribution rangeA. 1800–18101.1801K. aegyptiaca (Lamarck 1786: 142) Candolle (1801: t. 64) [DC.]Synonym of K. deficiens (Forsskål 1775: CXI & 89) Ascherson & Schweinfurth (1887: 79)Yemen, Arabian Peninsula2.1801K. spathulata Candolle (1801: t. 65)AcceptedChina3.1802K. laciniata (Linnaeus 1753: 430) Candolle (1802: t. 100) [DC.]AcceptedAfrica [widely cultivated]4.1805K. alternans (Vahl 1791: 51) Persoon (1805: Accepted 446) [Pers.]Arabian Peninsula5.1805K. lanceolata (Forsskål 1775: CXI & 89) Persoon (1805: 446) [Pers.]AcceptedAfrica, Arabian Peninsula, India6.1805K. pinnata (Lamarck 1786: 141) Persoon (1805: 446) [Pers.]Accepted[Mauritius] Madagascar [widely naturalised]7.1805K. verea Persoon (1805: 446), nom. illeg.1Synonym of K. crenata (Andrews 1798: t. 21) Southern to tropical Africa Haworth (1812: 109)B. 1811–18208.1812K. crenata (Andrews 1798: t. 21) Haworth (1812: 109) [Haw.]AcceptedTropical to southern Africa9.1812K. acutiflora (Andrews 1809: t. 560) Haworth (1812: 109)Synonym of K. spathulata Candolle (1801: t. 65)Eastern India[?]C. 1821–183010.1821K. ceratophylla Haworth (1821: 23)AcceptedChina11.1821“ K. hybrida ” Steudel (1821: 135), nom. inval.2Not validly published. Andrew. i. 21” was included in the synonymy of Kalanchoe verea Persoon (1805: 446), so making K. verea nomenclaturally superfluous and illegitimate under Turland et al. (2018: Art. 52.1). 2 The name “ Kalanchoe [as “ Calanchoe ”] hybrida ” Steudel (1821: 135) was not validly published. Steudel (1821: 135), which is usually cited as the place where this ‘name’ was validly published, as well as Steudel (1841: 252), for that matter, included K. hybrida, in the synonymy of K. spathulata Candolle (1801: t. 65) and therefore cited this ‘name’ as a synonym only (Turland et al. 2018: Art. 36.1 (b)). Although René Louiche Desfontaines (1750–1833), abbreviated as ‘Desf.’, is sometimes cited as having proposed the epithet ‘ hybrida ’ [he did not do so under Kalanchoe, nor under Cotyledon Linnaeus (1753: 429)] (see for example https://www.ipni.org/n/274373-1), following Turland et al. (2018: Art. 46.4 and its Examples) the author attribution is not “Desf. ex Steudel (1821: 135) ” because “ C. hybrida ” Desf. was not validly published. On p. 135 of Steudel (1821) “ C. hybrida. Desf.” was only listed in the synonymy of K. spathulata Candolle (1801: t. 65). In this regard, K. spathulata Candolle (1801: t. 65) was placed in the synonymy of the later-published Cotyledon [note the genus name] hybrida Dumont de Courset (1805: 416), so making the latter name illegitimate. Candolle (1828a: 395) treated “ C. hybrida ” as a ‘name’ used only in horticulture in the Jardin des Plantes of the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Paris, France. Hamet (1908a: 45 [61]) similarly regarded the ‘name’ C. hybrida as having arisen in “Hort. Paris”, but placed this designation under K. laciniata (Linnaeus 1753: 430) Candolle (1802: t. 100) along with K. spathulata, while Dumont de Courset (1805: 416) regarded the latter name as applying to an accepted species, a view followed today. 3 Note that the later homonym K. teretifolia Deflers (1894: 299, t. 3–5) non Haworth (1831: 53, t.166) in Wallich (1831) refers to K. bentii C.H.Wright ex Hooker (1901: t. 7765) (see Smith 2022b: 179). 4 Wallich (1831: 53) stated: “I have of course adopted the specific name [i.e., Kalanchoe varians Haworth (1829: 302)] given to the plant by Mr. Haworth, although he politely offered to alter it to one I had suggested for it at the time of its discovery, and which was engraved on the plate long before I became aware of a name having been published already. I therefore request that the name Calanchoe [Kalanchoe] subamplectens, in Plate 167, may be altered to C.

Cotyledonoideae) (when, where, by whom, and from where did the material originate) between 1801 and 1908, when the final part of Raymond-Hamet's two-part monograph was published, pp. 204-210 in Phytotaxa 687 (2) on page 204, DOI: 10.11646/phytotaxa.687.2.3, http://zenodo.org/record/16705923
