Retellia claropunctata Robineau-Desvoidy. From Knutson & Vala 2011

Abstract

claropunctata Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830: 683. — Oken 1831: 1248 [in catalog].—Knutson et al. 1976: 64.7 [in catalog of the Sciomyzidae of the Americas south of the United States].— Evenhuis & Thompson 1990: 253 [as type of Retellia in list of Diptera in d’Orbigny’s Dictionnaire].— Marinoni & Mathis 2000: 162–209 [in cladistic analysis of Sciomyzidae (as Dictyodes dictyodes Wiedemann, 1830)].— Evenhuis et al. 2010: 143 [priority of claropunctata over Tetanocera dictyodes Wiedemann, 1830, as type specimen of Retellia: “We also note that Retellia claropunctata Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 has priority over Tetanocera dictyodes Wiedemann, 1830, which is a change from previous catalog listings.”].— Murphy et al. 2021: 147–168 [synonymy with Dictyodes dictyodes, nomenclature]. HT: Sex? [Brazil] “l’intérieur du Brésil.” MNHN, destroyed (in litt. Christophe Daugeron, MNHN, 12 November 2014 to WLM) DIST: ARGENTINA (Buenos Aires). BOLIVIA (Cochabamba). BRAZIL (Rio de Janeiro to Rio Grande do Sul). URUGUAY (Montevideo). Map: Abercrombie & Berg 1978 (as Dictyodes dictyodes) Note: Retellia claropunctata has been collected at 15 localities: two in Bolivia (both in Cochabamba), 11 in Brazil (one in Rio de Janeiro, four in Paraná, four in Santa Catarina, two in Rio Grande do Sul), and two in Argentina (one in Buenos Aires, one in Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires). Abercrombie & Berg (1978) reported R. claropunctata (as D. dictyodes) from Uruguay, overlooking Steyskal’s 1974 finding that the Uruguayan specimen was actually R. lacera Wiedemann (as D. platensis). Although there are no field data, R. claropunctata almost certainly occurs in suitable habitats in Uruguay; it has been recorded reliably from neighboring Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Adults of R. claropunctata and R. lacera were collected together in December in a marsh 28 km south of Buenos Aires in the province of Buenos Aires (JA, unpublished). Adults of R. claropunctata have been collected in every month except January. Larvae and puparia have been found in April. The last known collection is from 2011. FIGS (as D. dictyodes): Macquart 1844 (♂ head); Marinoni & Mathis 2000 (antenna, ♂ terminalia, ♂ genitalia); Marinoni & Carvalho 1993 (♂ genitalia; spermatheca); Knutson & Vala 2011 (wing), this paper (habitus, anterodorsal head, wing) BIOL (as D. dictyodes): Abercrombie & Berg 1978. Behavioral Group (from Knutson & Vala 2011): 11; Phenological Group (from Knutson & Vala 2011): 6 HOSTS/PREY OF LARVAE (as D. dictyodes): Sixteen species of freshwater snails representing 11 genera and six families from both South and North America. First-instar larvae fed readily on eggs within the gelatinous egg masses of the freshwater Helisoma species. Larvae did not feed on the operculate freshwater snails Pleurocera acuta or Bithynia tentaculata, although the latter was sometimes attacked and killed. IMMATS (as D. dictyodes): Abercrombie & Berg 1978 (E, L1–L3, P) CHR (as D. dictyodes): Boyes et al. 1969 (karyotype) MOL_DAT: (as D. dictyodes): Y dictyodes (Wiedemann), 1830: 583 (Tetanocera). Macquart 1844: 336 [synonymy with claropunctata].— Steyskal 1974: 427 [generic revision].—Knutson et al. 1976: 64.7 [in catalog of the Sciomyzidae of the Americas south of the United States] HT: ♀ [Brazil], “Rio de Janeiro.” ZMHB, unnumbered dictyoides (sic) Wiedemann (Tetanocera).— Macquart 1844: 336–337 [misspelling; in catalog, description of male]. dictyodes (Malloch), 1933: 321 (Dictyodes).— Steyskal 1974: 428–429 [new combination, redescription].— Knutson et al. 1976: 64.7 [in catalog of the Sciomyzidae of the Americas south of the United States].— Murphy et al. 2021: 147–168 [synonymy with Retellia claropunctata].
