This study investigates the influence of community development programmes on the socio-economic status of residents in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. Grounded in the philosophy that sustainable development begins with community participation, the research explores how literacy initiatives, vocational training, and health education programmes contribute to human capital development, poverty reduction, and improved living standards. Using a descriptive survey design, data were collected from a sample of 675 participants comprising members and leaders of community-based organizations through a structured questionnaire titled “Influence of Community Development Programme on the Socio-Economic Status of Community Members Questionnaire (ICDPSSCMQ)”. Data analysis involved mean, standard deviation, and z-test at a 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that community development programmes significantly enhanced the socio-economic status of the community through increased literacy, skill acquisition, self-reliance, public awareness, and behavior modification. Respondents affirmed the positive impact of these programmes on the provision of social amenities and the reduction of social ills such as youth restiveness. However, the study also identified key challenges, including inadequate funding, lack of government commitment, poor recognition of community development in policy agendas, and insufficient research data for planning. The study concludes that community development programmes are vital instruments for socio-economic transformation and national development. It recommends increased government support, prioritization of community initiatives in policy planning, and strategic investment in trained community development personnel to optimize their impact
