Submersion Injuries in Pediatrics: Risk Factors, Management, and Prevention

Abstract

This educational presentation, developed and presented during my pediatrics rotation, reviews the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and management of pediatric submersion injuries. It includes both drowning and near-drowning events, delving into high-risk factors for severe injury along with evidence-based management strategies and prognostic indicators. Additionally, preventative measures such as anticipatory guidance, CPR training, and pool safety interventions are discussed, with an emphasis on public health and injury prevention. The goal of this presentation is to equip healthcare providers with a comprehensive understanding of pediatric submersion injuries to improve outcomes and reduce preventable deaths.
