Protéger l'océan pour la préservation de la biodiversité, l'approvisionnement en nourriture et l'atténuation du changement climatique

Abstract

La 15ème réunion de la Conférence des parties (COP15) de la Convention des Nations unies sur la diversité biologique (CDB), qui doit se tenir en 2021, devrait déboucher sur un accord mondial en faveur de la nature, avec un consensus émergent visant à protéger au moins 30% de l’océan global d’ici 2030. Les résultats de l’étude coordonnée par Enric Sala publiée en mars 2021 dans le journal Nature, donnent du crédit à cet objectif et suggèrent qu’une augmentation de la surface des aires marines protégées et une répartition spatiale cohérente de ces dernières pourraient avoir un triple avantage : non seulement mieux protéger la biodiversité marine par rapport à l’existant, mais aussi stimuler la productivité des pêcheries, en exploitant une moins grande surface mais avec de meilleurs rendements, et amoindrir les émissions de carbone remis en suspension par le chalutage profond.
