Open access is a widely studied phenomenon and its relevance to current scientific communication has been pointed out by organizations, academics, science managers and officials of national and international agencies. However, there are few studies about the knowledge and perceptions of scientists about this form of publication, as well as about their strategies in the face of the increasing costs of open access in non-hegemonic contexts. This article presents the results of an international survey on practices and perceptions regarding open access and the costs known as article publication charges (APC) carried out by the Global Research Institute of Paris (GRIP), selecting the results of 3 countries: Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. The findings indicate that, although scientists have a basic knowledge of the meaning of open access, their understanding is not evident when it comes to differentiating types or routes such as gold, bronze or diamond. The regulations of open access in each country are analyzed comparatively, along with the availability of infrastructure and training, to determine the role incentives and institutional policies play in the publication strategies of researchers.
