Dataset de Acidentes com Ciclistas nas Capitais Brasileiras (2018–2024)

Abstract

This article presents the development of a public, standardized, and integrated dataset on cyclist accidents in Brazilian capitals between 2018 and 2024, aiming to address gaps in the availability and quality of road safety data. The study is based on the need to overcome the fragmentation and underreporting commonly found in official databases, which hinder robust analyses and the formulation of active mobility policies. The methodology was structured into five stages: data collection from official sources (RENAEST, PRF, and IBGE), preprocessing with attribute normalization, geospatial integration, enrichment with contextual variables, and export with complete documentation. The final dataset consolidated 27,498 records with 12 attributes, covering information on date, location, victim profile, type and severity of accidents, weather conditions, and road characteristics. Exploratory analyses revealed that capitals such as Goiânia, Curitiba and Brasília concentrate the highest absolute numbers of accidents, while smaller cities present proportionally higher risks. Young adults aged 18 to 24 were the most affected, and most fatalities occurred on roads without dedicated cycle paths, highlighting the importance of cycling infrastructure in reducing fatality rates. The dataset is available on the Zenodo platform and provides valuable support for academic studies, predictive analyses, and the formulation of public policies for safe and sustainable mobility.
