Abstract

El examen de 135 números de colecta de Bursera heteresthes Bullock, depositados en su mayoría en los herbarios mexicanos, pudo revelar que: 1.- La distribución geográfica conocida de la especie se extiende del sur de Jalisco al este de Guatemala, pero en forma de tres áreas separadas, a mencionar: a) de Jalisco al oeste de Guerrero, b) del este de Oaxaca a la Depresión Central de Chiapas, y c) en el sector boreal y oriental de Guatemala. 2.- A pesar de las disyunciones y de la notable variabilidad morfológica de la especie, no parece haber fundamento para separarla en dos o más entidades taxonómicas, por lo que B. steyermarkii Standl., descrita de Guatemala, se ubica en sinonimia de B. heteresthes. 3.- El rasgo de los estaminodios heteromorfos y petaloides, enfatizado en la descripción original de B. heteresthes, no es característico en realidad de la especie, sino de un individuo con flores anormales. 4.- Los principales caracteres distintivos de B. heteresthes son: a) hojas casi siempre trifolioladas, rara vez algunas con cinco foliolos y entonces con el raquis anchamente alado, b) foliolos bien desarrollados por lo general de más de 3 cm de largo y con el margen crenado, serrado o dentado casi hasta la base, c) inflorescencia en forma de racimo o panícula más bien laxa y multiflora, cuyos ejes por lo general sólo llevan pelos glandulares. 5.- Aunque las características de sus hojas, inflorescencias y flores acercan a B. heteresthes a B. biflora (Rose) Standl., B. fragrantissima Bullock y B. infernidialis Guevara & Rzed., es factible que sus relaciones filogenéticas se dirijan más bien hacia B. madrigalii Rzed. & Calderón, en función del raquis anchamente alado de sus hojas quinquefolioladas.Se incluye una descripción enmendada de la especie, ilustraciones de su distribución geográfica conocida y de la variabilidad de la forma de las hojas, así como una clave para separar las especies conocidas de Bursera sect. Bullockia que, al menos en algunas de sus poblaciones, tienen hojas mayormente trifolioladas.
