El estudio de metales trazaen cuerpos de agua,sedimentos y organismos,es importante para establecer susniveles naturales, variabilidad y origen,principalmente en las áreas más sensiblesa la contaminación, como son estuariosy bahías. El desarrollo industrialha tenido su asiento, en un porcentajebastante significativo, en las riberas deríos, estuarios y bahías, descargando allílos efluentes de desechos que contienengrandes cantidades de sustancias nocivas,asumiendo que estas son usualmentedispersadas y transformadas por el mar.Dentro de esas sustancias, los metalestraza constituyen un caso especial, yaque no se degradan y, una vez depositados,permanecen en el medio ambientemarino sin sufrir prácticamente ningúncambio cualitativo.
