Overfished! A card game for raising awareness about responsible seafood choices

Abstract

VeriFish is piloting a card game for raising awareness about responsible seafood choices and the importance of marine ecosystems, based on scientifically variable data sources. Through comic-style illustrations and interactive gameplay, the game introduces players to real world marine species and the potential impact of fishing practices. Each Species Card features factual data on a species sustainability and nutritional status, based on criteria such as overfishing risk, bycatch, and nutritional value. Players learn to identify fisheries that are assessed to be more sustainable using an infographics design. The game supports ocean literacy, and is ideal for use in schools, aquariums, and outreach activities aiming to build a generation of informed, sustainability minded citizens. All media are freely available under CC BY license via the VeriFish website. A “white label” version is available upon request to customize with their own branding.
