Abstract

This article investigates the phenomenon of Kirlian photography, questioning the widespread interpretation of the recorded glow as a manifestation of an «aura» or «biofield» influenced by emotional states such as profanity or prayer. Based on experimental data from over 1000 conducted experiments, initiated in 2003, it is hypothesized that observed changes in the glow of the Kirlian discharge plasma corona are solely due to physiological factors, specifically skin conductivity, static electricity accumulation, as well as the burning off of oil droplets and drying of the skin surface with repeated exposures. Individual perception and psychological state of the subject also play a role, but are not directly related to the verbal expression of emotions. In this context, hypothetical discussions about the possibility of «aura» photography are not considered, as the photographs merely reflect the glow from an electrical discharge or plasma flash during electrodermal conductivity. Special attention is paid to the analysis of artifacts arising during Kirlian experiments, such as the «phantom leaf» effect, which is explained by a lack of experimental rigor, multi-layered photographic materials, and image superposition. This article is an academic version of the research published and broadcast in the media in 2004, 2009, and 2014.
