ROTOSCILLOMBRAGE– THE CONSTRUCTION AND ARTISTIC APPLICATION OF A COMPUTER CONTROLLED LOUDSPEAKER ARM

Abstract

This paper presents Rotoscillombrage, a project exploring the artistic and technical applications of a motorized rotating loudspeaker arm. Developed as part of the Moving Loudspeakers residency at the Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology (ICST) in Zurich, the system functions as both a spatialization tool and a generative sound synthesis device. The paper details the mechanical and digital design of the system, addressing challenges in motor control, real-time sound interaction, and spatial feedback. A key focus is the use of site-specific modeling techniques to simulate and refine spatial audio behavior, enabling composition in the absence of continuous physical access to the installation site. The project resulted in both a concert and an installation, demonstrating how controlled loudspeaker movement interacts with acoustics to create emergent musical structures. By integrating real-time compositional strategies and dynamic spatialization, Rotoscillombrage contributes to contemporary discourse on kinetic sound art and spatialized electronic music. This work underscores the potential of moving loudspeakers as an expressive medium, expanding the relationship between sound, space, and motion in live performance and installation contexts.
