Abstract

The increasing migration is changing society in many ways. Along with this change, the process of reestablishing the social balance begins. In this research, various factors affecting the adaptation of immigrants are explored, focusing on the points of contact between immigrants and the local population. Based on the experiences of 16 Syrian young people studying at Istanbul University and Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, the study examines the social networks they belong to, intergroup contact, factors influencing interaction, and the strategies they developed to cope with difficulties. A qualitative research method was used, adopting a phenomenological design focused on the individual experiences of the participants. The findings indicate that language proficiency, similarities and differences with the local culture, and interaction with the environment play significant roles in establishing connections. Additionally, it was observed that participants face various problems during official procedures or in social life, may be subjected to prejudiced rumors or attitudes when their “Syrian” identity is recognized, and despite encountering adversity, some participants continue to interact with their surroundings. These participants were eventually accepted by their social circles, suggesting that maintaining contact despite challenges is crucial for social integration. It is believed that projects aimed at reinforcing integration through public institutions can lead the process to more positive outcomes
