
This study explores the ecological, socio-cultural, and governance impacts of the Lapat system—a traditional indigenous conservation practice in Calanasan, Apayao. Drawing from field observations, Likert scale surveys, interviews, and documentary analysis, the research highlights Lapat’s role in forest regeneration, biodiversity conservation, and community-based natural resource management. Results reveal strong community support for Lapat as both an ecological safeguard and a cultural institution. The integration of Lapat with formal environmental policies, such as Municipal Ordinance No. 14 s. 2021, and its recognition through UNESCO’s Biosphere Reserve framework enhance its legitimacy and effectiveness. Findings underscore that Lapat is not only a heritage-based environmental strategy but also a model for culturally rooted governance. This study advocates for the institutionalization and adaptive strengthening of Lapat as a sustainable conservation mechanism.
