From Tools to Companions: A Critical Review on the Role of AI and Robotics as Sustainable Emerging Earthling Existence in the 21st Century

Abstract

n the 21st century, artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics have evolved beyond their traditional roles as mere tools to become integral companions in shaping a sustainable future for humanity. This critical review explores the transformative impact of these technologies on global sustainability efforts, highlighting their potential in addressing urgent environmental, social, and economic challenges. From precision agriculture and climate modeling to healthcare automation and disaster response, AI and robotics are being integrated into essential systems that support human well-being and ecological balance. However, this shift also raises pressing ethical, socio-political, and technological concerns, such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, job displacement, and the environmental footprint of intelligent machines themselves. The paper evaluates current trends, challenges, and opportunities, while urging a redefinition of human-technology relationships—from control to coexistence. Emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary frameworks and responsible innovation to ensure that AI and robotics serve as sustainable allies rather than disruptive forces. This review ultimately envisions a future where these technologies, grounded in ethics and sustainability, support a resilient and equitable existence for all Earthlings.
