Abstract

This document summarises a wide range of relevant knowledge on vocabularies and standard data, defines terms and provides recommendations on their use in different contexts and communities within disciplines that work with history. In addition to general explanations of terms and processes, it identifies relevance and quality criteria for vocabularies and formulates recommendations on the use of vocabularies for key entities in historical research. The document provides an important basis for discussion for the NFDI4Memory consortium to formulate and adopt guidelines and recommendations for controlled vocabularies and standard data (in conjunction with recommendations on data curation and data quality) for research projects and memory institutions.
