Abstract

Protoglyptodon Ameghino 1885 Protoglyptodon sp. (Figura 4B) Material referido. LIL-PV 743 (C. Rus. 1038), osteodermo aislado fragmentario. Comentarios. El material LIL-PV 743 es asignable a la subfamilia Glyptodontinae debido a que presenta la misma combinación de caracteres descritos en el apartado anterior. El osteodermo muestra caracteres muy diferentes a los osteodermos asignados a Paraglyptodon (ver más arriba), dados por la cantidad, forma y tamaño de las figuras laterales y de los orificios. Presenta gran similitud con los osteodermos descritos por Ameghino (1889, Lam. LIV) y asignados a Protoglyptodon primiformis. En Protoglyptodon los surcos que separan la figura central de las figuras periféricas son poco profundos, como en Paraglyptodon, diferenciándose por la presencia de numerosos y pequeños orificios (siempre más de 10 unidades) en el primero, y grandes y escasos orificios (siempre menos de 8) en el segundo. En Protoglyptodon primiformis los orificios son mayores a los de LIL-PV 743, pero presentan la misma disposición y cantidad (Figura 4). Calcaterra (1979) describe dos especies más del género Protoglyptodon para el Plioceno de Uruguay; sin embargo, estos taxones fueron basados en fragmentos de tubos caudales, sin hallar nuevos materiales de la coraza. Debido a esto se considera al osteodermo descrito como perteneciente al género Protoglyptodon, sin poder discriminar su pertenencia a una determinada especie.
