Megalosaurus

Abstract

Megalosaurus (Figura 7) Catalogado en el CNBA como “ Megasaurus”, este modelo corresponde a Megalosaurus, el primer dinosaurio descripto formalmente por William Buckland en 1824, proveniente de rocas del Jurásico del sudeste de Inglaterra. Ha sido un ícono en lo que respecta a las reconstrucciones paleontológicas ya que desde sus inicios fue representado en dibujos y esculturas. En 1854 Owen reconstruye a la especie como un cuadrúpedo, de cuerpo bajo y rechoncho, cola relativamente corta y una posición relativamente erguida, con el vientre bien separado del piso. Esta reconstrucción será la guía para la realizada por Hawkins en el Crystal Palace Park, donde adiciona una especie de giba a la altura de la cruz. El modelo Vetter de Megalosaurus se asemeja a la reconstrucción de Benjamin W. Hawkins (véase Figura 25). Hoy en día, el aspecto de Megalosaurus es muy diferente y es reconstruido como un dinosaurio terópodo bípedo, de cabeza corta y de cuerpo esbelto.
