From Mandala to crafting clay: An Exploration study of Jewellery Design

Abstract

The present research aims to explore the process of transforming Mandala art into a jewellery that is wearable, focusing on to develop these designs with clay. Mandala is a symbolic representation of Buddhist tradition. As Mandala art with its intricate patterns and spiritual significance, offers a rich source for creating visually creative and meaningful pieces. This research aims how the concentric structure and geometric forms, symmetry of mandalas can be interpreted in clay jewellery design. Thorough an extensive exploration of design principles, crafting techniques this aims to translate the two dimensional mandala art into three- dimensional magnificent pieces of jewellery. By bridging the gap between traditional art and contemporary fashion, this study aims to propose methodology for designers and artists who are interested in merging this concentric structure or geometry with wearable jewellery. The findings highlight the challenges faced and creative opportunities involved in creating the clay jewellery by adapting mandala art, as well as the cultural and aesthetic implications of such transformations. This exploration lays the groundwork for the future development of mandala- inspired jewellery by offering the fusion of art , craftsmanship and personal expression with the jewellery making process. This research further lays out a proposed methodology for designers interested in incorporating Mandala motifs into jewellery through clay. It includes guidelines for visual analysis, material selection, surface techniques, and symbolic integration, creating a step-by-step approach for future design development. The findings highlight both the creative opportunities and technical challenges faced in adapting two-dimensional Mandala art into three-dimensional clay jewellery. These include maintaining symmetry, achieving precision in detailing, and ensuring structural integrity of the clay pieces.Ultimately, this exploratory study lays a strong conceptual foundation for future prototyping, material experimentation, and user-focused design. It encourages interdisciplinary collaboration among designers, artisans, and cultural scholars, and opens up possibilities for a new genre of jewellery that blends ancient wisdom with contemporary artistry. By combining the meditative practice of Mandala creation with the tactile beauty of handcrafted clay, this research proposes a new dimension in jewellery design—where tradition meets innovation, and art meets soul.
