
This dataset records the contents of all issues and supplements of the South African poetry magazine New Coin Poetry, during its first five years of publication. New Coin Poetry was founded by Guy Butler, Professor of English at Rhodes University, South Africa. Throughout this period, New Coin was edited by Butler, with Ruth Harnett joining as Assistant Editor from the second issue (1.2, April 1965), before becoming Butler’s co-editor from the ninth issue (3.1, March 1967). New Coin Poetry was initially published as a broadsheet, before adopting magazine format from the thirteenth issue (4.1, March 1968). In addition to the twenty issues published between January 1965 and December 1969, five supplements were published. New Coin Poetry was published in Grahamstown, by the S.A. Poetry Society at the English Department, Rhodes University. All contents during this period are in English. The dataset was compiled from print copies held at the Cambridge University Library and the Bodleian Library, University of Oxford.
