Rüstem Paşa Camii Çinilerinin Restorasyonu (2016-2020): Çinilerin Mevcut Durum Analizi ve Belgelenmesi -1

Abstract

Anahtar Kelimeler: Rüstem Paşa Camii, Osmanlı Çini Sanatı, İznik çinileri, Çini Restorasyonu ABSTRACTLocated in Istanbul's Eminönü district and built by Mimar Sinan, Rüstem Pasha Mosque stands out as one of the significant examples of Ottoman classical architecture, particularly noted for its richly decorated interior adorned with exquisite tiles. The mosque’s exterior arrangement exemplifies Sinan’s early and middle-period pyramidal design approach, which prominently emphasizes the central dome. Within the interior, the tiled wall surfaces extending up to the beginning of the structural support system remain in the background, thereby visually accentuating the supporting elements and the covering system. The tiles of Rüstem Pasha Mosque, regarded as the pinnacle of 16th-century Ottoman ceramic art, predominantly reflect the characteristic features of İznik workshops, occasionally displaying elements that may originate from Kütahya production. The classification based on motifs, composition, and placement reveals the mosque’s rich decorative repertoire. Rüstem Pasha Mosque’s tiles hold a distinguished place in Ottoman art history, not only for their aesthetic excellence but also for their production technology, material quality, and stylistic reflection of their period. This study examines the restoration practices of Rüstem Pasha Mosque’s tiles, carried out between 2016 and 2020 under the supervision of the General Directorate of Foundations, Istanbul 1st Regional Directorate, and the guidance of the Scientific Committee. Throughout the restoration process, the mosque’s architectural structure, wooden elements, wall paintings, and tile decorations were restored through a holistic approach. The building’s ground movements and static problems were meticulously monitored during this period. Additionally, the tiles in the mosque have been evaluated based on restitution and survey reports; their stylistic and compositional features have been analyzed, and they have been classified according to their motifs, compositional structure, and spatial arrangement. Keywords:Rüstem Pasha Mosque, Ottoman Tile Art, İznik Tiles, Tile Restoration
