Comparison of Haemodynamic Parameters between Atracurium and Cisatracurium during General Anaesthesia in Abdominal Surgeries

Abstract

Background: Atracurium Besylate and Cisatracurium Besylate both belong to Benzoylisoquinolium group of Non-depolarizing Muscle relaxant. In fact, Cisatracurium is the 1R-cis, 1’R-cis isomer of Atracurium. Both have distinct chemical properties regarding onset time, potency, histamine release etc. despite their structural similarity. Objectives: The research aimed to assess and compare the efficacy of 0.5mg/Kg IV Atracurium (twice the ED95) as opposed to 0.15 mg/Kg IV Cisatracurium (thrice the ED95) for intubation, focusing on intubation conditions and haemodynamic changes during general anesthesia in abdominal surgeries. Methods: The study was conducted by taking 70 patients for various elective abdominal surgeries under general anaesthesia belonging to ASA grade I and II, aged 18-60 years of either sex. Patients were divided into two groups of 35 patients each, Group A receiving Atracurium and Group B receiving Cisatracurium and it was approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee (Human) of Assam Medical College and Hospital. Informed consent was taken and procedure of the study was explained to them in their own language. Both the groups were compared and analyzed for choosing a better NMBA amongst the two. Results: In this study, we found a steadier hemodynamic response for Cisatracurium when compared to Atracurium, establishing it as the preferred drug in clinical scenarios demanding ideal intubation conditions.
