Australian Spend-Based Emission Factor dataset (Scope 3 data)

Authors: Wood, Richard;

Australian Spend-Based Emission Factor dataset (Scope 3 data)

Abstract

Australian Scope 1,2,3 Spend based Emission Factors The emission factor dataset provides Scope 1, 2 and 3 (upstream) emissions in kiltonnes-CO2eq/Million AUD. Emission factors are provided for each Australian input-output industry group. The dataset is derived from Australian Input-Output tables, Australian Greenhouse Gas emission accounts and EXIOBASE data. The dataset covers both Australian emissions and emissions embodied in the supply-chain of imports. The coverage of imports is due to a coupling of the Australian input-ouput data to the EXIOBASE multi-regional input-output dataset, updated in 2025. The emission factors are currently calculated for 2019 to 2022 based on latest available energy, emissions and economic input-output data. 2023 data is possible to calculate, given funding, and adjustments can be made to provide estimates for 2024. To facilitate usage, a free CC-BY-SA version is available for 2019 data in basic prices. In order to keep updates funded, more recent data (e.g. 2020-22 or more recent updates), and extensions such as conversion from basic to purchaser prices (inclusion of taxes and margins) are available under a commercial licence upon request. A commercial licence will also remove the -SA (share alike) requirement of the data. The authors are open to making all data freely open under a longer-term, sustainable funding model. The full description of the calculation is provided in the attached documentation. This dataset was created by Professor Richard Wood, an expert in input-output analysis and industrial ecology. Richard is an editor-in-chief of the Journal of Industrial Ecology and has been recognised as one of the world's highly cited scientists (top 1%) by Web of Science/Clarviate. The work is curated by XIO Sustainability Analytics and Vector Sustainability. Get in contact for further information or consulting services. For global spend-based emission factors, reach out to XIO Sustainability Analytics for access to pre-compiled EXIOBASE data.
