Dataset of European biomass production systems

Abstract

This dataset contains centroid-level information for biomass plantation fields and stands across multiple European countries, derived from open-access spatial polygon data such as cadastre and land use layers. The dataset was used in the analysis presented in the paper European biomass production systems: characterization and potential contribution to land use diversity. The file includes: Geographic coordinates (EPSG:3035) of the centroids Plot area in hectares Proportions of surrounding land use categories within a fixed buffer from the edge of each polygon (1 km) A land use diversity index calculated for the buffer zone around each plot The data were compiled from multiple national and European sources, most of them under open licenses. A detailed list of data sources per country, year of data acquisition, and licensing information is included in the accompanying metadata document. Note: For certain countries, exact field coordinates and area values are not shown due to licensing restrictions imposed by the original data providers. These entries are marked as NAs. Column Name Description species Crop species considered in the study country Countries where the data was extracted area_ha Area of the biomass field/stand in hectares ID Unique identifier for each entry with country code LUDI Land Use Diversity Index (Shannon Index) for buffer area forest Proportion of forested land within buffer (0–100) agriculture Proportion of agricultural land within buffer (0–100) others Proportion of other land uses within buffer (0–100) long Longitude of the plot centroid lat Latitude of the plot centroid source_id Reference to original source used for this plot (linked to metadata file)
