Forensic Analysis of Herbicide Formulations Using GC-QQQ-MS and LCQQQ-MS: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract

AbstractHerbicides, which are commonly used in agriculture, present a major challenge in forensictoxicology because of their environmental contaminating potential and misuse in poisoningcrimes. The present review considers the forensic examination of herbicides with special referenceto the application of Gas Chromatography with Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry (GC-QQQMS) and Liquid Chromatography with Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry (LC-QQQ-MS) inthe determination of common herbicides such as paraquat, atrazine, glyphosate, metribuzin, andoxyfluorfen. The said analytical techniques are very sensitive, specific, and can detect herbicidesat trace levels in environmental and biological matrices. The article presents the chemicalstructure-based classification and mode of action of herbicides and highlights factors influencingthe choice of detection strategies.
