Abstract

Entre 1983 y 1999 se identifican cambios en el modelo de desarrollo de Venezuela por la entrada en vigencia de una nueva etapa del modo de producción capitalista, conocida como neoliberal, manifestándose socio-espacialmente en la ciudad. Las políticas neoliberales favorecen la hiperacumulación de capital en manos de unos pocos, privando a las mayorías de sus derechos vitales. En este contexto, la gentrificación se convierte en una estrategia para extraer –en nombre de la regeneración de la ciudad– la plusvalía del suelo urbano, profundizando las desigualdades socioespaciales. El objetivo de este artículo es estudiar las causas y efectos particulares de la gentrificación en Caracas a finales del siglo XX. Para ello, el trabajo se estructura en tres partes: 1) hacia un modelo de gestión urbana neoliberal; 2) la mercantilización del suelourbano y la estratificación social de la ciudad formal; 3) el reconocimiento de los barrios y la densificación de la ciudad informal. Los resultados muestran que la gentrificación es una práctica urbana que, en Caracas, acentúa la asimetría socioespacial entre la ciudad formal y la informal.
