Abstract

O livro apresenta uma pesquisa voltada à indústria mineral no Brasil, com enfoque em aspectos econômicos, sociais, ambientais e educacionais. Elaborado por professores da Universidade Federal de Alfenas (MG) e da Universidade de São Paulo (SP), analisa a relevância da mineração para a economia brasileira. São abordados conceitos de mineração, geologia e atuação profissional, além da análise do setor mineral em níveis global, nacional e regional. O conteúdo examina os impactos ambientais e sociais da atividade mineradora, bem como suas implicações na qualidade de vida. A economia brasileira é discutida em relação aos setores agropecuário e industrial, com destaque para o papel da mineração. O texto inclui temas como inclusão social, escolha profissional e mercado de trabalho nas engenharias, especialmente nas áreas de Mineração e Geologia. Também apresenta o histórico do curso de Engenharia de Minas da Universidade Federal de Alfenas e as perspectivas do curso de Engenharia Geológica, com reflexões sobre os campi fora das cidades-sede e seu papel na interiorização do ensino superior na Região Sudeste do Brasil.

The book presents research on the mining industry in Brazil, focusing on its economic, social, environmental and educational aspects. Authored by professors from the Federal University of Alfenas (MG) and the University of Sao Paulo (SP), it analyzes the role of mining in the Brazilian economy. It outlines concepts in mining, geology, and professional practice, and examines the sector at global, national, and regional levels. The study assesses the environmental and social impacts of mining and their implications for quality of life. It also discusses Brazil’s economy in connection with the agricultural and industrial sectors, emphasizing mining’s contribution. Additional topics include social inclusion, career paths, and the engineering job market, particularly in Mining and Geological Engineering. The book reviews the history of the Mining Engineering program at the Federal University of Alfenas and examines the prospects of the Geological Engineering program, with attention to the role of satellite campuses in expanding higher education in southeastern Brazil.
