The Correct Hummus

Abstract

L'ignorance et la dépravation règnent en maîtres dans ce monde. Les gens errent, aveugles, pensant qu'ils mangent du « houmous » alors qu'en réalité ils ingèrent une abomination : une pâte crayeuse et sans âme, souvent froide, souvent aigre, et parfois même sucrée. Ce n'est pas une simple question de préférence culinaire. C'est une question de vérité, d'épistémologie, d'intégrité ontologique. Il existe un idéal platonicien du houmous, soyeux, humble et lumineux, et pourtant, comme tant de protocoles cryptographiques, ce qui circule dans la nature n'a qu'une ressemblance superficielle avec l'idéal, manquant à la fois des garanties théoriques et de la saveur pratique. Nous vivons à une époque où des institutions de confiance entières se sont effritées, où des articles sont acceptés à des conférences dont le titre contient le terme « apprentissage automatique » alors qu'ils ne sont guère plus que des rituels d'ajustement de courbes. Dans un tel monde, est-il surprenant que les gens pensent que le houmous provient du rayon réfrigéré dans un bac en plastique à côté de la sauce ranch ? Cet article vise à restaurer une petite partie de cette intégrité perdue. Dans ce qui suit, je vous donnerai la recette du vrai houmous.

Ignorance and depravity fill this world. People wander around, blind, thinking that they are eating “hummus” when in reality they are ingesting an abomination — a chalky, soulless paste, often cold, often sour, and occasionally even sweet. This is not a matter of mere culinary preference. It is a question of truth, of epistemology, of ontological integrity. There exists a platonic ideal of hummus — one that is silky, humble, and luminous — and yet, like so many cryptographic protocols, what circulates in the wild bears only superficial resemblance to the ideal, lacking both the theoretical guarantees and the practical flavor. We live in a time when entire institutions of trust have eroded, where papers are accepted to conferences with “machine learning” in the title despite being little more than curve-fitting rituals. In such a world, is it any surprise that people think hummus comes from the refrigerated aisle in a plastic tub next to the ranch dip? This paper aims to restore a small piece of that lost integrity. In what follows, I will provide the recipe for The Correct Hummus.
