Republican France is today ahead of the rest of the world, in the area of the secularization of morals, political life and the functioning of social life in general. These advances have enabled significant secularization and given France the system most conducive promote the secular principle. Currently, we are witnessing a return of religion in society, calling into question secularism and the separation between Church and State. Can this secularism claim to be universal? We propose some avenues for reflection in order to bring about the triumph of an “Islam of Enlightenment” in France and in the EU. We must recognize that holy war is outdated and useless and we must refuse any form of fundamentalism. In the Quran, there are as many verses which advocate peace as war. Muftis must favor the former, the peaceful ones. Imams must be confined to the mosque. We need to promote an Islam of Enlightenment.
