The Egg Crisis in the United States: Veterinary Inspection's Strategic Role in Food Safety

Abstract

This technical article examines the ongoing egg supply crisis in the United States, triggered by recurrent outbreaks of avian influenza (H5N1), and explores the strategic role of veterinary inspection in mitigating food safety risks. Drawing from professional experience in egg production, biosafety, and regulatory compliance, the article highlights the public health implications of authorizing unfertilized broiler eggs for human consumption without adequate traceability and microbial control. The discussion includes real-world applications of HACCP systems, outbreak control, and traceability protocols implemented in the Brazilian egg industry. The article advocates for sustainable, science-based solutions and emphasizes the value of veterinary expertise in reinforcing national food safety infrastructure.
