This article explores an innovative model that turns waste into value by reintroducing spent laying hens into sustainable agricultural systems. Originating in Portugal, this practice repurposes hens post-egg production to contribute to pest control, soil fertility, and food waste reduction—particularly within olive orchards. The model provides ecological, economic, and animal welfare benefits. This article examines its adaptation potential for U.S. agriculture, especially organic systems, and highlights logistical, regulatory, and environmental considerations for scalable implementation.
