Abstract

In 1922, plans to build a museum to house the impressive art collection of the magnate Matsukata Kōjirō (1866-1950) in the city of Tokyo were well underway. Designed by the British artist Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956), and known as the Kyorakukan, the museum would have featured works of all kinds: sculptures, paintings, furniture... illustrating the richness of Western art with a particular emphasis on late 19th and early 20th-century productions. Among the artists included were Rodin, Monet, Manet, Renoir, Cézanne, Corot, Pissarro, Matisse, Segantini… and many others who were prominent figures in Western modern art at the time. Nestled in the hills of the Japanese capital, the museum would have showcased an exercise in modern international architecture, adhering to an updated global language that would have introduced advanced concepts for its time in the country. However, the international circumstances that negatively affected the magnate's finances, as well as a series of legislative changes, led to the project's suspension and ultimately its definitive abandonment due to the dissolution of a significant portion of Matsukata's own collection.
