The authors discuss the possibilities and challenges involved in the Stefan Zweig Digital project. Digital collections encourage narrative possibilities of the archive in two ways: (1) they recreate the experience of the physical archive as a single entity; and (2) they enable an enhanced research experience. However, they also run the risk of lessening or eradicating original and pre-digital contextual relationships between materials. Despite the risks, potential benefits to scholarship are too great. Archivists acknowledge their mediating role in constructing a metanarrative around digital collections.
