The Upper Biebrza wetlands, located in Biebrza National Park in northeastern Poland, are a critical ecosystem known for their alkaline fens, transitional mires, and bog woodlands. As part of the Natura 2000 network, these wetlands play a vital role in water retention, biodiversity conservation, and carbon sequestration. The SpongeScapes project applies targeted Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to restore the natural hydrological balance, including rewetting peatlands, improving groundwater recharge, and stabilizing water flows. These actions aim to enhance the wetlands' resilience to climate change, support local biodiversity, and provide long-term benefits for sustainable agriculture and eco-tourism.
