Relationship between Transportation Infrastructure and Regional Economic Growth in Pakistan

Abstract

Abstract In this research, the provinces of Sindh and Punjab are used as case studies to examine the connection between transportation infrastructure and regional economic growth (EG) in Pakistan. The study examines the relationship between Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth and the growth of road infrastructure over the period 2010-2020 using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression models. The data shows that Punjab has a modest level of road infrastructure development, while Sindh has a comparatively well-developed level with an average mean of 21.18. However, the relationship between the expansion of road infrastructure and economic growth in both provinces is minor, emphasizing the impact of other factors. The results point to the necessity of a comprehensive strategy that takes into account a variety of factors influencing economic growth. In order to accelerate infrastructure development while preserving the environment, recommendations for policymakers include prioritizing transportation infrastructure investment, encouraging cooperation between provinces, diversifying economic activities, emphasizing infrastructure quality, establishing monitoring systems, investing in alternative forms of transportation, thoroughly analyzing data, developing long-term regional development plans, and encouraging public-private partnerships. Keywords: Transportation infrastructure, economic growth, Pakistan, correlation analysis, regression models.
