Abstract

The teaching of prehistory is a basic pillar in the Spanish curriculum. However, its teaching is uneven, unbalanced, stereotyped and far removed from the disciplinary advances of prehistory. This means that its enormous educational potential as a transformative agent goes unnoticed and inhibits the meaning of teaching prehistory. The aim of this study is to determine the place of prehistory in secondary education by analysing a sample of the most widely-read textbooks in Spain. A mixed method of descriptivecritical discourse analysis is followed, through the ad hoc construction of a categorical matrix, with a vocation for replicability, which allows the recording and emptying of data. The results show that school prehistory through its textbooks continues to reproduce androcentric and Eurocentric biases, limits the perspective of evolution in terms of diversity and maintains a didactic treatment of chronological temporality.
