MixMatters project: Saccharification of bio-waste streams to obtain simple sugars for the fermentation of a 2,3-butanediol recombinant E. coli producer.

Abstract

Saccharification of bio-waste streams for 2,3-butanediol production in MixMattersAuthors: Guillem Tomas, Gema Vivo, Ainoa Escrich, Ana Torrejón Presented at ECB 2024, 30 June - 3 July 2024, Rotterdam. The MixMatters project develops an Integrated System for separating and valorising bio-waste from the agri-food sector. This study focuses on the Valorisation Hub, where fruit and vegetable biomass from wholesale markets, greenhouses, and the food industry undergoes enzymatic saccharification to break down complex sugars. The resulting simple sugars are then fermented by a recombinant E. coli to produce 2,3-butanediol, a valuable chemical building block. This approach enhances resource efficiency and promotes sustainable bio-based solutions.
