Die Briefprotokolle des Landgerichts Griesbach von 1604 bis 1626

Die Briefprotokolle des Landgerichts Griesbach von 1604 bis 1626

Abstract

This paper presents the notarial records („Briefprotokolle“) which were prepared by the Bavarian Griesbach district court in the years 1604 to 1626. An attempt is made to reconstruct the process by which they were created. In a short statistical evaluation, the documents are categorized according to the legal processes described in them and discussed with numerous examples. It is shown that important economic and social historical information can be obtained from the notarial records that is not available from other sources. At the same time, it is shown that due to the high error rate, it is imperative to verify the information in the notarial records using independent sources. In the digital appendix, these volumes of the letter protocols are published both in the original and in the form of very concentrated and structured summaries („Regest“), which are suitable for automated further processing with IT systems.
